St George is the main business centre for the Balonne Shire in Southern Inland Queensland. St.George is a very pretty town with many beautiful gardens and tree lined streets.
The local climate conditions are ideal for a large variety of horticultural and agricultural enterprises. The leading industries are cotton, sheep/wool, grain crops, wild game harvesting, fruit and vegetable production, and beef /cattle. The horticultural industry has expanded into table grapes, rockmelons, pumpkins, onions and watermelons.
The predominantly warm dry conditions make the district a popular destination for travellers. The unique tourist attractions provide a wide range of options for visitors. The walkway along the Balonne River in St George is a beautiful spot to exercise, take in the river gum scenery and spot some of the varied bird life. The River is also the place for rowing, skiing, boating and fishing.
Many beautiful trees line the streets of St George. In spring the bauhinias in Victoria Street give a beautiful dispay of purple and white flowers. Jacaranda trees provide an impressive display in November. Every second year St George gardeners enter in the Australian Open Garden Scheme which welcome many visitors to the area.
